Magenta Private Island, located approximately 6 miles offshore from Placencia, Belize, is a luxury resort designed to deliver world-class hospitality in a remote tropical environment. From private villas and resort amenities to desalination and communications infrastructure, the island requires dependable electricity around the clock.

Because the island is completely off-grid, the power system had to be both robust and elegant, capable of delivering utility-grade reliability while supporting the refined atmosphere expected from a high-end destination.

The result is a sophisticated microgrid powered by Sol-Ark hybrid inverters and Discover Energy Systems lithium batteries, enabling the island to operate independently while maintaining seamless, uninterrupted power.

The Challenge

Operating a luxury resort on a remote island presents unique energy challenges:

  • No access to mainland utility infrastructure
  • High electrical demand from 11 guest villas and resort facilities
  • Continuous power requirements for desalination, communications, and hospitality services
  • Need for stable power quality and minimal generator usage
  • Tropical environmental conditions require resilient equipment.

The solution needs to deliver true 24/7 microgrid reliability while maintaining efficiency with a long system life.

The Solution

The island’s energy system is built around a hybrid microgrid architecture that combines solar energy, lithium-ion battery storage, and generator backup.

At the heart of the system is a power platform built with:

  • Sol-Ark hybrid inverters

  • Discover AES RACKMOUNT lithium batteries

Two Power Systems

Two synchronized AC-coupled power plants operate together as a unified microgrid.

  1. Resort Power System

    Supplies energy to the main resort, including:

    • Guest villas

    • Swimming pool

    • Desalination plant

    • Starlink communications

    • Spa and guest services

    • Lighting

  2. Kitchen Power System

    A dedicated subsystem that powers the resort’s commercial kitchen. The system is designed to handle high load peaks and to synchronize with the main island grid.

This architecture provides load isolation, operational flexibility, and improved reliability.
