Coast Family Home – Energy Independence

OVERVIEW

A coastal family home in Queensland, Australia, transitioned from an aging 5 kW rooftop PV system to a comprehensive, hybrid solar + storage energy solution built around the HELIOS ESS lithium battery. This installation was greatly influenced by Australia's Cheaper Homes Battery Program, which is driving solar + storage installations across the country. With the added incentive, the homeowners were able to achieve their goals of complete energy independence, whole-home backup, seamless solar self-sufficiency, and energy capacity for future loads - EV charging and pool heating.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

The homeowners living in this coastal Queensland house had an existing grid-tied 5 kW PV array installed in 2015. While functional, the system could not keep pace with their growing energy demands nor provide backup during outages. The homeowners decided to upgrade their home energy system.

In their upgraded system, the family wanted:

  • To eliminate reliance on the grid
  • Multiple days of backup during extended bad weather or outages
  • Real-time visibility of system performance
  • Support for future electrification, such as EV charging
  • Quality components that qualified for incentives and rebates.

They reached out to The Switch, who designed and deployed a solution, with technical support from DPA, to deliver these outcomes.

ENERGY SOLUTION

The homeowners, the installer (The Switch), and DPA developed a hybrid system tailored to the home's current energy usage and future requirements.

  • The solar+storage system harvests plenty of energy. To such an extent that by 8 AM, the system has replenished all the energy used overnight. It consistently generates over 100 kWh on its good days.
  • It maximizes self-consumption, ensuring minimal electrical bills.
  • The system provides whole-home backup, including the air conditioning.
  • Excess energy from the system could be used for EV charging and the pool's heat-pumps.
